I remember when I graduated from kindergarten, telling the crowd what I wanted to be when I grew up. This question is a favorite and is asked throughout childhood and again when graduating high school. We are encouraged to know what we want to do for work from an early age. Some people accomplish this goal early on, while others change their majors throughout college or graduate with a degree in a field they no longer love.
And now we have most adults working jobs they hate, living for a paycheck until they die. They are miserable because they know this isn’t their purpose in life; it is simply to pay the bills. When in truth, this is a world system that takes our eyes off the actual work God gave us to do. Every job and every day should be centered around accomplishing the work needed for the kingdom.
Yes, we have to pay our bills, but I wonder how many people go to their graves feeling empty because they never accomplished what God put them here to accomplish? Even within jobs we dislike, we can complete some of our mission on this earth, but God wants us to live bigger and bolder.
All about the Kingdom
No matter our age, we should consult with God to see if where we are is helping accomplish kingdom work. Because God never intended for us to wake up, go to work, and die. In John 17:4, Jesus stated, I have glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. We must ask ourselves if we will be able to say the same when we leave this earth.
As Christians, there is a lot to do for the kingdom, and millions of Christians are in the wrong roles. We stay focused on what the world calls work and forget our first role as followers of Jesus. Living by this world system creates miserable humans, which creates issues in every area of our lives. We pursue careers and goals without consulting God and end up stressed and frustrated; because we landed in a place where we don’t belong. God can use us even when we are out of our role, but we will never fully accomplish what he has for us.
Time to Walk in your Calling
If you have a desire burning in your heart, it is time to pursue it. Start by pursuing God in prayer and finding the first step. Do not plunge in without thought; instead, look to God to guide and provide. Stop focusing on why you cannot do something and trust God to take care of it. If God has called you to something specific, he will get you there.
I promise there will be a time of preparation first, so you will need to be patient. I can also guarantee the devil will fight you. The last thing Satan wants is Christians walking a path that will win souls to God. He wants us tired, beaten down, and pursuing a meaningless life. You will need to make your relationship with God a priority and shut off the world. Turn off the tv, take a break from social media, and stick your nose in the Bible. You must be all in if you want to hear God.
Prioritize the Kingdom
In these last days, it is key that we prioritize kingdom work. When we get to heaven, God won’t commend us on how much money we made or what we accomplished in our field. Instead, He will reward us for what we did that glorified Him.
Winning souls glorifies God. Healing the sick glorifies God. Helping the needy, ministering to the widows and orphans, loving others, and preaching the gospel all glorify God. We must change our priority from earning money to earning the statement, well done, good and faithful servant.
But What if I don’t know what God Called me to do?
A Specific calling may not be in your heart, but you can still accomplish the list above. You can lay hands on the sick and see them recover. You can visit with a widow and support an orphanage. And it isn’t only the preachers who God calls to preach; you can also preach the good news to those around you. You can be the hands of Jesus by reaching out to the needy.
And most of all, you can love others. Love with God’s kind of love and see the harvest it will bring. Let us take on the attitude of Jesus, whose every action was about the Father’s business. We are here to glorify God, may every work we accomplish bring him glory.
