We are in that awkward time of year where it is Fall in the morning and Summer in the afternoon. Layering is the key to surviving Fall in the south. This morning I picked out a tee and found a matching button-up to throw on top. I noticed the top was wrinkly from sitting in a drawer for a year. So, I warmed up my steamer and went to work getting the wrinkles out. As I was steaming, the cord came unplugged, and immediately, it lost steam. I could not continue until I plugged the steamer back in.
When we unplug from our source of power, we will also lose steam. We will be more prone to temptations, become stressed, tired, and just worn down. Here are three ways to re-connect to God when we have become disconnected.
Spend time in the Bible
“All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
This first one is a no-brainer, but how often do we let life get in the way of us sitting and meditating in the Bible? For me, it is often. I will admit that I have a hard time just sitting and staying focused on the word. But I am trying to remember that it is quality over quantity. Rest in the word. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you new truths and bring a notebook along to write anything that stands out to you. Sometimes this will be a few words that strike me as powerful or a verse that makes me think.
Meditating on one verse can nourish your hungry spirit for the day. Please, don’t get me wrong; spending enough time in the word so that God can speak to you is very important. My point, however, is don’t get so focused on powering through chapter after chapter that you forget to listen to the words you are reading. One verse could do more for you than five chapters.
Worship
“Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.” Psalm 150:6
Worship is dear to my heart and is one of my favorite ways to reconnect to God. It truly changes the atmosphere. If I feel sadness, anxiety, stress, or fear, turning my music app on to listen to Rend Collective and dancing around my kitchen with my hands raised to the Lord will change my mood instantly. God once told me that worship changes everything, and I have found this to be true. Singing his praises and keeping my mind stayed on his goodness honors God and encourages me. No matter where you are, turn on your favorite worship music and sing your heart out with hands lifted high, okay maybe not while driving, 10 and 2, please.
Thanksgiving
“I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of your wonderful deeds.” Psalm 9:1
Last year I found a Christian gratitude journal with three lines to write what I am grateful, to God, for each day. I have found that when I start the day by writing in this journal I find myself thanking God throughout the day for everything good. When I focus on His goodness and am thankful for everything good, my mind has a more difficult time becoming obsessed with the trials of the day.
If you are feeling like you have lost steam and need some encouragement pick up your bible, turn on some worship music, and remember to thank God for every good thing in your life. And don’t be surprised to find that your focus has returned to your source of power.
